WEEK 5: Witches & Women | Akata Witch Response

Reading the urban fantasy Akata Witch was very refreshing for me. When we think of witches and magic we might think of Hollywood's version of witched who are silly and only have evil intentions in using their magic. This book gave me insight into another culture, as well as a fresh take on magic. In Akata Witch, a witch is more of a natural healer and aid who uses their powers for good, not evil. Through the book we see Sunny deal with lots of hardships integrating back into her native culture after living in a Western society. Because of Sunny's bravery, I think that this strong female character is an inspiration to all women, particularly young girls who might feel different or insecure during the adolescent stage.
