WEEK 13: The Man Who Fell from Earth Film Response
After watching Nicolas Roeg’s The Man Who Fell to Earth this week in class, I definitely felt it was worth writing about in this weeks blog. This was my first time ever watching this film and I noticed many unusual, exotic characteristics of the main role. Also, I thought the film's fascinating qualities really stuck out to me.
The extraordinary performance by David Bowie really made the whole story come to life. From his super intelligence and freaky blank stare, to his gentleness and vulnerability was very moving and bizarrely authentic in a way. The relationship between the character and the hotel receptionist Mary Lou was strange yet it worked and became a compelling concept of the film.
We can get a lot of clues to the time period of this film. The incorporation of the western landscape is very prominent throughout. As well as the idea of capitalism in American society of the 70s.
This film is not solely based on genre and not trapped in genre. We question the idea of "is this a Sci-Fi movie" or is it a normal film with Sci Fi elements?
