WEEK 3: Asian Horror Response: A Wild Sheep Chase

This week I read a Wild Sheep Chase by Haruki Murakami. One thing that immediately caught my attention was the way the author chose to refer to the main character as “he”. I feel that this decision to never name to the protagonist allows the reader put themselves in the the story as the main character. The “He” character has an odd romantic relationship with his girlfriend which is seen through his description of how his girlfriend’s ears make him feel.

Through reading this novel, I think the characters and their relationships, like those of the main character with his business partner, his friend, and his girlfriend are all believable. While most J Horror is poetic, mysterious, and more fable-like, a Wild Sheep Chase felt more contemporary and relatable.
