WEEK 3: Kwaidan Film Response

I greatly enjoyed watching Kwaidan this week and feel it is very under appreciated! I observed that this genre of horror is much different than what we as an American audience are used to. When we watch horror we expect to see jump scares, gore, and fast paced, heart racing action. Kwaidan was very different from that in the sense it was haunting and disturbing but with beauty. This 1964 film is based on a Japanese folk tale of four stories. The segment we observed was The Woman in the Snow.
Some might loose interest in a film like this due to it's leisurely pace, intentionally unrealistic sets,  and how it may not be scary enough to qualify as a horror film. While the execution was low-tech, it truly showed the power of human creativity and the strong storytelling ability. I was in awe of this film's visual beauty and how the stories allowed you to relax your mental state and appreciate the un-rushed nature of the film.
